English language and inter-cultural capability training to enable managers to apply and capitalise upon their existing language fluency in English in situations such as: Multi-cultural team participation and leadership Written and oral presentations in English Relationship-building and negotiation Interviews Adapting to life and work in the Anglophone world. Recently I have found myself working with: a manager seeking a career-change, preparing cvs and covering letters in English for multinational corporations where the working language is English. This also incorporated the development of interview strategies and repeated rehearsal against the particular requirements of Job Descriptions and Person Specifications. a junior manager seeking a significant promotion who needed both to hone his English and to sharpen some aspects of his management capability. a leisure service manager and successful French actor needing support to take up the challenge of a TV series anda significant part in improvisational comedy play where he will need to think, speak, act and react in English and within a distinctively English context. These are, as you will see, each very different situations with very different requirements which lie beyond the realm of Management or English textbooks. This is where Tonyversity experience ‘scores’ in being able to tailor things very much to client requirements. Links: An Illustration of a Tonyversity Learning Programme and its outcomes. Are you a professional?
Are you a professional looking to: simultaneously enhance your English, Management know-how and intercultural capabilities Tonyversity will:- work with you on a one-to-one (or small team basis, if you prefer) in order to determine critical intercultural & English language learning and professional Development requirements and how these may be most efficiently, effectively and economically addressed, subject, of course, to constriants such as time and budget. Training programmes will be designed specific to your own distinctive personal/professional needs and and may be delivered in your place of work, home or at the Tonyversity Office in Bruebach near Mulhouse. Often, for reasons of being able to ‘escape’ the distractions of the workplace or home, clients prefer to visit the Tonyversity Office. Training may be arranged both in and out of office hours and over extended or highly intensive periods. Such training will be based around the your current and anticipated work & projects, for example: powerpoint presentations; report-writing; memos and letters; promotional materials; technical specifications, meetings and their management; interviews and interviewing, client sales ‘pitches’; customer reelationship-building negotiation etc preparing for living and doing business in Anglophone countries In fact Tonyversity will address with you any situational context in which you may be expected to have to ‘perform’ in English. Prepare your cv & covering letter in accordance with job descriptions and person specifications and to rehearse your strategy/technique for impending interview in English Tonyversity will: work with you on the design and content of both your cv and covering letter. These days a ‘basic’ cv and a ‘standard’ covering letter is never going to be enough to get anyone on an interview shortlist: it is a ‘Buyers Market’ out there in employment terms – employers are overwhelmed with choice. To address such choice and operate an effective ‘screening system’ which ensures that they get to employ the very best people for the posts, employers are increasingly becoming more sophisticated in their use of Job Descriptions and Person Specifications. Most Anglophone companies, multinationals and large organisations operating on the international marketplace have Human Resource Management Departments who are charged with improving recruitmen &, selection procedures and reducing labour turnover: they are very partiular about who they interview. Cvs and covering letters have to address and reflect critical aspects of the Job Description and characteristics deemed ‘essential’ and desirable by the Person Specification. Job applications, cvs and covering letters are now almost becoming an ‘art form’: difficult enough in your first language… but in your second or third…? If operating in English is a key expectation of the post, your documentation needs to be ‘spot-on’. Tonyversity will help you to make that leap in both precision English and the art of putting together attractive job application packages designed to catch the eye, maintain interest and enhance the chances of being selected for interview. Getting to interview is one thing… but preparing for it and having to deliver it in English as your second or third language is quite another. Tonyversity will work with you on your interview strategy, based closely upon the requirements of the Job Description and Person Specification against which you will doubtless be directly assessed. This will involve preparing for certain, likely and even potentially unexpected and difficult questions and helping you to find a punchy, up-beat, concise and...read more
Are you a company/organisation?
Are you a company/organisation looking to: 1. develop higher-level English capabilities for key staff to support your international growth and export aspirations in Anglophone markets … Tonyversity will:– work with you and your staff on a one-to-one or team basis in order to determine critical intercultural and English language learning requirements and how these may be most efficiently, effectively and economically addressed, subject, of course, to constriants such as time and budget. Training programmes will be designed specific to the needs of the organisation and group/individual and may be delivered in situ or at the Tonyversity Office in Bruebach near Mulhouse. Training may be arranged both in and out of office hours and over extended or intensive periods. Such training will be based around the current and anticipated work & projects of the trainees themselves, for example: powerpoint presentations; reports writing; memos and letters; promotional materials; technical specifications, meetings and their management; interviews and interviewing, client sales ‘pitches’; customer relationship-building negotiation etc preparing for living and doing business in Anglophone countries – in fact: any situational context in which you and your staff may be expected to have to ‘perform’ in English. 2. to further develop the management capabilities of your staff as part of a programme of Professional Development delivered in English? Tonyversity will: effectively offer two-for-one added value by combining Management and Professional Development training with further enhancement and application of existing English capability: Acquire and /or enhance higher-level Management knowledge and skills by means of a Professional Development programme taught in English Acquire and /or enhance higher-level English language and inter-cultural capability via a Professional Development Programme built around management functions where staff already possess expertise. After years in management and university/industry level management and English training, Tonyversity strongly believes that learning always takes place more effectively and efficiently (and often very much more quickly and enjoyably) when learners are familiar with and confident in the particular applicational context of their learning. Accordingly Tonyversity does not engage in ‘straight’, traditional, headphone-based, ‘lab’ style language learning, but rather in a one-to-one or small group learning/teaching ‘partnership’, working together on current or forthcoming work-based projects to develop both English and Management capability. 3. ‘finesse’ its materials to ensure their accuracy and cutural sesnsitivity and suitability for use in Anglophone markets: technical documents; journal articles; website content, marketing & promotional materials etc Tonyversity will: apply its native English-speaking ability, expertise in written and spoken English language and knowledge of Anglophone cutures honed in Management and Higher Education to ‘finesse’ your translations of critical documents and web pages in English ensuring that they are technically accurate and establish the professional, culturally-sensitive ‘tone’ you require. Far too often, brilliant research documentation, commercial bids & presentations, print and web-based marketing and associated materials ‘fall at the last hurdle’ as culturally-insensitive, inappropriate and inaccurate translation renders them weak at best and, sadly, laughable at worst. For example, arriving in one French tourist city, visitors would be greeted everywhere with gigantic roadside posters: Welcome in XXXXXX…………….. … It should, of course, have been “Welcome to XXXXX “ (It would be invidious, perhaps to mention the name of the town concerned!) If you are going to the trouble of translating material into English, it needs to be translated correctly, otherwise it sends the message that...read more
Tonyversity is the brainchild of ‘Tony Jolley’: me. Clearly it is a hybrid creation of my forename and the word ‘university’. In short, this is because, at the dawn of the internet age in the early/mid 1990s, before the first simple web-editors were available and hand-coding pages was the norm, I began designing, developing and introducing websites and subsequently ‘virtual learning environments’ for my students of Tourism and Strategic Management at Bournemouth University. The name ‘stuck’ and I am synonymous with it, so in embarking upon my own business it seemed both inevitable and appropriate that I would register the business name and associated domains. The core team is myself (see extensive detail below) plus my wife, Ellen, who is also a native English speaker, Prof. Agrégée in English and University...read more
