AI/IA Artificial Intelligence or Automatic Inability?

Now there’s another AI for you!! This time last year  AI / Chat GPT and all the other derivitives had not been made openly available.  They came online in October. Since this date universities  have seen a massive rise in work being substantially (and more often than not entirely) produced using thse tools. To your teachers, your Exam Board, your Faculty and your University, it is an ‘Alarme Incendie’ which takes you to the ‘Sortie’: It represents a shortcut… yes… (but not the one you might be thinking of: a shortcut to a time-saving assignment submission; but rather to being instantly and definitively ‘shown the sortie‘ and failing an...

Hi there! Hereunder you will find some important feedback from your exercise presenting yourself to your new employer in the form of a 'Personal Profile'. Please READ this, commit to memory and USE this in your future work/English conversations as soon as you can: once you USE it you OWN it and it will come naturally in future. OK? I WILL go over this in class….. Tutor's observations: I set this up as a professional exercise and was expecting a professional response, yet I think only three people actually produced something using a PC: why?  If your boss asked you to produce something for the company magazine or website,...

Mr. Good-Life ‘listens’ to tree language At such long wavelengths And low modulations Anyone else would figure they’re flat: Featureless; Soundless; Speechless; Meaningless; [But to him they’re anything but!] – They seem to represent More collectivity than individuality, More society even than family In temperate...

The Police might read my ‘Liz’ As all too unacceptably familiar At a time when the vast majority Is looking for ultimate respect Of the recent Head of the Monarchy. In Oxford, one Symon Hill On his way home from the Sunday Service, Stopped to listen to King Charles III’s Accession Proclamation. At the point Charles was declared: “Our only lawful & rightful Liege Lord” Mr. Hill called out: “Who elected him!” Without much further ado He was handcuffed And bundled into a Police van. None of the officers present Could answer his one critical question: ‘Just what law am I being arrested under’? At the Police Station. At the point of being de-arrested, He was told...

The summer of 2022 Has just been declared The hottest in Europe For some 500 years. Lakes shrank. Rivers deep enough to dive in Dropped to levels that Wouldn’t float a little’un’s lilo-bed Let alone a loaded barge. Then this August, On the almost dry bed of the Elbe On the Czech/German border A so-called ‘Hunger Stone’ was found With the chilling, chiselled legend: « Wenn du Mich Siehst, Dann Weiner ». « If you see me: then weep » My first thought was of a vague memory Of Herr Gent, my German Teacher Drumming it into us [Well, into me – I wasn’t good at German] That...

We’re all used to Periods of drought And lack of water; But what about Floods where excess of it Means there is nothing to drink Or nothing one dare drink: The system’s shot. IF residents are ‘lucky’ enough To have a working tap, The water’s rust or dirt brown: Fit only for flushing, Or, for the foolhardy, For showering mouth firmly shut.   Drink only bottled Is the mantra; Blame the name of the game: The water system overhaul Delayed and deferred over decades.   General consensus is that places Like Jackson and Flint Have been consistently, overlooked, By-passed, back-burnered and left behind Because of ‘environmental racism’: Priority, clean water budgets Haven’t gone primarily to the poor, To Non-WASP, basically Black Or Native American towns. Some have sought to ‘debunk’ his concept; For example, on the basis that Human ingenuity and science Have always managed to enable humanity To become so much more Efficient, Effective And Economic [3 of the famous 4Es!] In food and production of necessities, That supply has always run ahead Of the population growth curve. But, in the face of projections Suggesting global population Is heading for nearly 11 billion by 2100 – A 30% increase on today – Will it always work like...

The one suggesting that in some places Money-grabbing, British landlords Are taking unfair advantage of market conditions: [Putting rents up dramatically In the face of shortage of supply As a result of the government’s Policy of ‘Right to Buy’, Such that some tenants are having to pay A good 2/3 of their total...

After three, two-week-or-more 40°C+ Heatwaves, almost end to end, I danced on the doorstep in the rain [Well, when I say ‘danced’ … More a case of ‘moved about liberally’ – Think of the pictures conjured up By the youngsters’ term: ‘Dad Dancing’ And you won’t be far off!!’]  . That was a storm in a proverbial teacup Compared to last night’s deluge. Spent half an hour in the car Parked outside our home Waiting for it to subside Before daring to risk the 14 steps And as many paces to get to the front door Without need of water wings, A snorkel and the services of a lifeguard! Could see her looking at him, Fast-forwarding twenty years or so And trying to picture Her son’s life after her. What might it be? Would he be safe and secure? Would he be provided for? Would he be loved and cared for? Could he enjoy his life without her? He must be all of 62 or 63 now….  . We don’t know we’re born, do we…? Or...

A young woman reported to police For a social media post Which might have suggested She was just thinking of maybe heading out-of-state To find a legally-operating abortion clinic. Others using risky, old-wives-tale Recipes and ‘remedies’ As dangerous DIY solutions With no medical support service in place To address the inevitable, ensuing problems. America had another Puritanical ‘Prohibition’ In the 1920s and early 30s To ban alcohol consumption. . What happened? . It drove the drinking culture underground And straight into the welcoming arms Of the mafia and the criminal underworld. This profiteering got so bad That Prohibition was eventually prohibited And a form of bar-licensing was adopted. Let’s get logical about it: The demand for abortion will remain. Then, side-on, first left then right, It spreads each wing, Fluffs its feathers And buries its beak To seek out those itches It can’t otherwise scratch. Facing me; Looking straight at me, It caws and kraas [Apparently that’s what Crows do if they’re not caw-ing]. At one level, of course, It’s the total absence of life: Its discontinuation: Its ‘cul de sac’ Its very ‘dead’ end.  . But what is death for? What purpose might it serve? Indeed, do we have to die….?  . Some scientists speak of ‘Scenescence’: The ‘Force of Natural Selection’ Weakening to the point at which Life can’t continue to sustain itself Beyond the urge to reproduce.  . Does Gravity naturally ‘weaken’ over time? No, it obeys fundamental laws: is immutable. . Does the speed of light lessen With time or distance? Clearly not. . On the one hand this is really serious, [And I wouldn’t dream of belittling it], But when one hears people complaining That they are now on Water Tanker deliveries Three times per day, I picture kids (mostly girls) & women Walking miles, barefoot, heavy vases on heads To bring life-sustaining water home From 30ft deep holes in river courses That haven’t been damp or wet For season after season: We still don’t know we’re born.  . Today I awoke in France to find That Fire and Water Were less romantically and more seriously related: News showed crews facing down multiple firestorms. With what…?  . Water. . For most of us, Ammonia Is a cleaning product. . For Vaclav it is The single most important element In enabling the world to feed itself. . 80% of global Ammonia production Is indispensable for fertilising our crops. Without it, our yields would dive To an extent that A good proportion of the world’s population Simply wouldn’t survive. So why not use 100%, you might well ask…. He was the originator of the ‘Gaia Hypothesis’ Which views Planet Earth And its living and non-living components As one self-regulating system of systems Which seems to privilege ‘life’ [Whatever ‘life’ is … But don’t look to scientists for that – They still can’t actually define it!].   I suppose that Lovelock was proposing A sort of scientific underpinning To Chief Seattle’s ‘All things are connected’ contention.
